Stroke Comeback Center's Schedule for 2008

     Session 1:  January 7 - March 7, 2008

SESSION 5:  October 20 to December 19, 2008

MONDAYS

 

10:30 A.M. – 11:30 A.M.      Selected Topics I

 

Supported conversation and in-depth communication centered around news, issues or topics that affect participants.  This group will provide both conversation and presentation opportunities.  Topics will be selected in advance to allow time for group member preparation.  A peer leader will be chosen for each day.  A variety of communication levels are included in this group.

 

11:45 A.M. – 12:45 P.M.      Presentation Group

 

This group provides an opportunity to practice brief presentations with a focus on speech clarity, language use, organization and presentation style.  Those interested in returning to work, participating in meetings, giving community speeches or just polishing their ability to speak in public would benefit from this group.

 

11:45 A.M. – 12:45 P.M.      Clarity is Key

 

This group will focus on speech intelligibility strategies including pacing and overarticulation.  A variety of communication levels can be accommodated.

 

1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M.          Book Club I

 

Read a condensed or regular version of a book, or listen to the book on tape.  This group will center on discussion of the content of the reading or on specific assignments for discussion.  Average number of pages read per week is 50 - 100.

 

2:15 P.M. – 3:15 P.M.          Writing Tool Box I

 

This group provides an opportunity to work on improving personal and professional writing skills including spelling and grammar. Computer use, email templates and writing software can be reviewed and practiced based on group interest.  TOOL BOX I is for individuals who can write paragraph to multi-page length information. 

 

3:30 P.M. – 4:30 P.M.          Brain Games 

 

This group will focus on memory, attention, organization and problem-solving skills..  Additional executive functioning skills will be included based on group interest. 

 

TUESDAYS

Supported conversation centered around topics of interest.  Focus is on expanding vocabulary and sentence structure.  A variety of communication levels can participate in this group.

 

11:45 A.M.  -  12:45 P.M.         Writing Tool Box II

 

This group provides an opportunity to work on improving personal and professional writing skills including spelling and grammar.  Computer use, email templates and writing software can be reviewed and practiced based on group interest.  TOOL BOX II in recommended for individual who writes at the word to sentence level.

 

1:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M.              Book Club II
 
Read a regular version of a book, or listen to the book on tape.  This group will center on discussion of the content of the reading or on specific assignments for discussion.  Average number of pages read per week is 1 - 50.
 
1:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M.             Mind Over Matter II
 
This group is intended for individuals with apraxia to develop motor movements for use in words and phrases using the Mind Over Matter program.  Groups will be formed for best compatibility of speech level.
 

2:15 P.M.  - 3:15 P.M.           Show and a Nibble

 

This group will focus on supported conversation and discussion regarding characters, plot, and outcome.  A variety of communication levels can participate in this group.  All members are welcome! 

               

3:30 P.M. - 4:30 P.M.              Computer Group
 
This group provides an opportunity to use writing software, practice email skills and navigation the Internet.  A variety of communication levels can participate in this group. This group is limited to 5 members.
 
 

WEDNESDAYS

This group is designed to develop basic reading abilities. The chosen reading material and activities will allow members with limited reading skills to participate and to enjoy reading again.

               

2:15 P.M. – 3:15 P.M.               Mind Over Matter©  I    

This group is intended for individuals with apraxia to develop motor movements for use in words and phroses using the Mind Over Matter© program.  Groups will be formed for best compatibility of speech level.

 

2:15 P.M. – 3:45 P.M.               Total Communication 

This group will meet for 1 1/2 hours and is intended for individuals with apraxia and/or aphasia to develop basic vocabulary and practice using verbal and nonverbal strategies to promote participation in communication with family, friends and in the community.

 

3:30 P.M. – 4:30 P.M.               Meeting of the Minds

This group provides an opportunity to focus on auditory comprehension skills, basic functional communication and social interaction using verbal and nonverbal strategies. 

 THURSDAYS
 

12:00 P.M. – 1:00 P.M.               Spice of Life Series

This enrichment series will combine a variety of topics chosen by participants to include, art, music, travel, photography, health and wellness.  Language tasks will be combined with hands on activities when possible.  All members are welcome!

 

1:15 P.M. – 2:15 P.M.               Presentation Group

Each 9-week session for our group programs has been structured to include all levels of communication.  Five is the maximum group size, allowing for everyone to participate and benefit. 

 

The Center is open Mondays - Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Hours on Friday can vary.  We suggest calling (703) 255-5221 to check on the schedule for Friday.

  • To enroll, call the Center to schedule a free intake.
  • Each group has a separate registration fee.
  • Due to limited availability, you must be enrolled in a group in order to schedule individual sessions.
