MONDAYS

Selected Topics I

10:30-11:30

  • for practicing conversational interactions
  • focuses on speech clarity, language use, organization, social interaction, and listening skills at a conversational level

Writing Toolbox I

11:45-12:45

  • for practicing word retrieval strategies
  • for members interested in improving their ability to find just the right word at conversational levels.

Book Club I

1:15-2:15

  • read a regular version of a book, or listen to the book on tape
  • discuss the content of the reading or specific assignments
  • average number of pages read per week is 50-100.

  • for members with apraxia and/or aphasia
  • focus on basic vocabulary and use of verbal and nonverbal strategies

  • take a virtual vacation every week as group members discuss travel destinations
  • members will discuss destinations, research the spot and present to the group for discussion

  • focuses on memory, attention, organization and problem-solving

  • learn to use templates to help write emails.

  • uses a "constraint induced" format to encourage sentence level speech (no writing or gesturing!)
  • for members who speak primarily in single words

  • focuses on reading and following recipes and numerical concepts
  • uses adaptive equipment for one-handed cooking
  • a variety of levels can participate in this group.

  • Supported conversation and in-depth communication centered on news, current events or social issues that affect participants.
  • A variety of communication levels can participate in this group.

The Center is open Mondays - Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Hours on Friday can vary.  We suggest calling (703) 255-5221 to check on the schedule for Friday.

Remember,

  • To enroll, call the Center to schedule a free intake.
  • Each group has a separate registration fee.
  • Due to limited availability, you must be enrolled in a group in order to schedule individual sessions.
